Warli Art - Tree of Life & Village 30x48

Warli Paintin is a style of Tribal Art found on the northern outskirts of Mumbai, Western India. It's not just an art, but a way of life for the Warli tribes. This art carries on a tradition stretching back to 2500 - 3000 BC.

The images of human beings and animals, along with scenes from daily life are created in a loose rhythmic pattern. These paintings use a set of basic geometric shapes: a circle, a triangle and a square. These shapes are symbolic of different elements of nature. The circle and the triangle come from their observation of nature. The circle represents the sun and moon, while the triangle is derived from mountains and pointed trees.

This painting displays an effort to keep the authenticity of the tribal art with modern touch. Activities within the day-to-day life o the tribal community and their beautiful connection with nature are the underlying elements of this painting. The painting summarizes how simple activities bring happiness in life and how life flows through various activities in tribal areas.

"Tree of life" and "Tarpa Dance" are shown at the center of the painting. "Tarpa Dance" is one of the important aspects of most Warli paintings. The Tarpa, a trumpet-like instrument, is played in turns by different village men. Men and women entwine their hands and move in a circle around the Tarpa Player. This Tarpa Dance denotes the circle of life. The celebrations reflect the happiness that emanates from our daily chores and how they give us the freedom to celebrate life after a hard day's work.
